Clean your gutters – prevent leaks and unwanted costs

Clean your gutters – prevent leaks and unwanted costs

Cleaning gutters is a job that many people put to the bottom of their to-do list.

But the consequences of clogged gutters can be serious – leaks, damp, water damage, blocked downpipes... It could even invalidate your insurance.

So, with autumn leaves starting to fall, now’s the time to start cleaning.

If you’re not sure about working at height, there are plenty of tradespeople who’ll take the job off your hands. But if you want to give it a go yourself, Lords have all the things you’ll need:

  • Ladder – No kidding (but most importantly, someone to stand at the bottom to hold it steady)
  • Gloves – Rubber gloves are best to protect you from sharp debris and potential bacteria

  • Safety glasses – To protect your eyes from flying debris

  • Bucket – To collect debris and prevent a messy cleanup

  • Gutter scoop or trowel – These tools will help you remove debris effectively
  • Stiff brush or scouring pad – For the final clean
  • Hose with nozzle – To flush out remaining dirt and check for proper water flow

Step 1 – Choose the right conditions

Plan to clean your gutters on a dry, calm and mild day – working in wet, windy or icy conditions is dangerous.

Step 2 – Inspect your gutters

Before diving into the cleaning, take a close look at your gutters. Are they loose or damaged? It might be time to call in the experts.

Step 3 – Remove larger debris

Using your gutter scoop or trowel, start at the downpipe and remove leaves, twigs and dirt.

Step 4 – Check for blockages

Clogged downpipes can cause water to back up into your gutters, overflow and potentially cause damage to your roof. If you can’t flush them clear, you might need an expert.

Step 5 – Scrub the gutter inside

Use a stiff brush or kitchen scouring pad to remove any remaining dirt or algae, and ensure smooth water flow.

Step 6 – Flush the gutters

Stat at the end furthest from the downpipe, and use a hose with a nozzle attachment to flush away any remaining dirt. Check for leaks and drips as you go.
