Leading from the Front: Lords and the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants

At Lords, we believe in creating strong connections and preserving the values and heritage of the builders’ merchant industry. Whether it is between people, businesses, or communities, collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. That is why our involvement with the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants is so important to us.

We are very proud that three of our senior team members, Shanker Patel (CEO), Steve Durdant-Hollamby (COO), and Jamie Herd (Specialist Merchanting Director) are upstanding members of this prestigious organisation. Their active participation highlights our shared commitment to building a better future for the industry, upholding high standards, and supporting the local communities we work with.

What is the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants?

The Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants (WCoBM) is a modern Livery Company in the City of London, dedicated to championing the builders’ merchant trade. It focuses on education, training, and charitable giving, while celebrating the unique contributions merchants make to the construction sector. Membership is by invitation and acknowledges significant contributions to the industry.

Livery Companies trace their origins back to medieval guilds that regulated trades in the City of London. Today, there are 111 Livery Companies, representing professions both ancient and modern. Together, they contribute over £70 million to charitable causes annually.

The Builders’ Merchants Company, number 88 in order of precedence, is one of the "Modern Livery Companies." Established to breathe fresh life into the Livery movement after World War II, these modern companies have brought renewed energy to the City’s traditions.

Shanker Patel reflects on his membership, stating, “It gives us a chance to collaborate with other industry leaders who share a passion for excellence and innovation. It also connects us with opportunities to give back and create positive change, which is something we care deeply about at Lords.”

Why It Matters to Lords

Our involvement with the WCoBM reflects our commitment to supporting the trade at every level. From championing education to advocating for the next generation of talent, we are proud to stand alongside an organisation that mirrors these values.

Steve Durdant-Hollamby, who is on the court of WCoBM and is currently the Keeper of the Roll, shares, “The WCoBM is a brilliant way to combine learning, leadership, and community. We are proud to use our involvement to celebrate and support the people who keep our industry moving forward every day.”

Being part of the WCoBM gives us the opportunity to lead by example, and we have always believed that true leadership is about more than business success. It is about helping others grow, challenging ourselves to think differently, and working together to create something that lasts, and is deserving of preservation.

Giving Back Through the Lords Group Foundation

Our work with the WCoBM is just one part of our broader commitment to giving back. Through the Lords Group Foundation, we support projects that make a real difference in our local communities.

From charitable grants and match funding to volunteering at local community groups, we invest in the people and places that make our business possible. The WCoBM’s focus on charity and education perfectly complements this mission. Together, we are creating opportunities, supporting the trade, and inspiring the next generation of builders and merchants.

Jamie Herd sums it up best, “This membership represents the best of what our industry stands for. It is not just about building businesses but also about building communities.”
