BEST WAYS TO CUT MDF

MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard and is a commonly used board in construction projects. MDF panels are a more affordable and versatile alternative to plywood, easy to cut which makes them ideal for furniture pieces.

What is MDF?

MDF is an engineered product made by breaking down residuals from hardwood or softwood into fine particles. These are then dehydrated, bound with resin and wax, and pressed into flat panels under high pressure and heat.

The manufacturing process creates a smooth surface finish for MDF panels, free from knots and grains, making it easy to varnish or paint. It is consistent throughout, therefore without splinters or voids. These particular features make MDF easy to cut for detailed designs.

MDF types

MDF panels are tan or darker brown. The sheets range in thickness between 4mm to 30mm and can be easily cut to size. Depending on their properties, MDF boards can be moisture resistant or flame retardant.

MDF uses

Being a versatile material, MDF panels are used in a wide variety of industries for both indoor and outdoor projects. Common applications include:

  • - Roofing
  • - Flooring
  • - Doors and framing
  • - Soundproofing
  • - Fire resistance
  • - Cabinetry
  • - Furniture

How to cut MDF

MDF is easy to cut to shape with the right tools. However, it is a relatively tough material that might chip or break if the wrong blades are used. Here is a guide on how to cut MDF:

Using a table saw

Install a laminate blade on your table saw and set it about 12-13mm higher than the MDF sheet. It is important that the surface of the table is clean and any foreign objects that could cause scratches are removed. Once the laminate is supported for safe table saw operation, start the saw, and feed the MDF slowly into the blade until the cut is complete.

Using a router

When cutting a MDF with a router, it is good to aim for a slightly larger cut then required. After the initial cut, you can use the router to trim the edges to the correct size. Using a carbide flute bit will provide a higher-quality cut with a router.

Using a jigsaw or a circular saw

Before cutting MDF with a jigsaw or a circular saw, place it on a steady work surface or sawhorse and secure it into place to prevent movement. Once you mark out the cut lines, run a knife along them with minimal pressure at a steady and slow pace. Cut the MDF with a carbide blad and TPI of minimum 20.

Always use protective gear when cutting MDF. Mask over your mouth and protective glasses will prevent dust and harmful chemicals from MDF composition to enter your eyes.
