Guide to Tiling on Plywood

Can you tile on plywood?

Yes, but various considerations need to be made first. If the floor consists of sheets that do not support each other, it is necessary to ensure that each edge is fully supported underneath.

Can you put tiles directly on plywood?

Plywood is remarkably dimensionally stable. Even so, it's not stable enough for tile. Even concrete is not a suitable base for tile; concrete must be uncoupled from the tile. Add an uncoupling material to the substrate to successfully install tile on plywood.

Can you tile on a plywood wall?

While plywood is not recommended as a background for direct wall tiling, it can still be used as a structural board when overlaid with a suitable tile backing board, particularly where installation of mechanical fixings is required e.g. for mesh backed natural stone where it is not possible to remove 75% of the mesh backing.

Can you put vinyl tile flooring on plywood?

Yes, provided it meets the specifications required for subfloor preparation. Bear in mind that plywood and OSB substrates tend to get 'roughed up' during construction, and any imperfections in the surface will eventually telegraph through to the surface of the floor.

Can you tile over marine plywood?

If you use marine ply as the surface for tiling, ensure that it is adequately rigid and stable. Movement can cause tiles to crack. The floor should be able to support the additional weight of the tiles without any deflection. Use a suitable primer, depending on the size of your tiles. Start with the backing board first before continuing to lay tile on the marine ply. The last step is to apply the grout.

What thickness does your plywood need to be?

When using plywood, you'll need to ensure it's at least 12mm or more in thickness to create a rigid surface for your tiles. This, along with your tiles, will raise the level of your flooring, so be sure to bear this in mind before you get started.

How to install tiles onto the plywood

  1. Install an Intervening Sheet of Plywood
  2. Leave a Proper Gap Between the Boards
  3. Screw the Plywood Down
  4. Trowel On the Modified Thinset
  5. Lay Down the Membrane
  6. Trowel on the Unmodified Thinset
  7. Install the Tile
  8. Apply the Grout
  9. Remove the Grout Haze
